Description White Embden Geese Breed History and Origin The White Embden goose is one of the most recognizable and widely raised domestic goose breeds. Originating in Europe, it was admitted to the American Standard of Perfection in 1874 and has long been valued for its size and meat production. Cackle Hatchery® Poultry Breeding Farm has been developing its White Embden goose bloodline since 1974. Appearance and Breed Characteristics White Embden geese are known for their snow-white plumage, stout, rounded body, and graceful upright neck. Their classic appearance is what most people picture when they think of a domestic goose. Mature geese typically weigh around 15–16 pounds, while ganders can reach 20 pounds or more, placing them in the Heavy goose class. Egg Production and Performance White Embden geese produce approximately 35–45 extra-large to 2XL white eggs per year. While primarily raised for meat, they offer consistent seasonal egg production suitable for breeding programs. Temperament and Behavior This breed is known for its calm and manageable temperament, making it easier to handle than more aggressive goose breeds. White Embdens will protect their nests and territory from predators but are generally not overly aggressive toward owners or other animals when properly managed. Fertility percentages typically range between 55–70%, with a recommended mating ratio of three females to one male. Gender accuracy is 100%. Meat Production and Farm Use The White Embden goose is a top choice for meat production, thanks to its rapid growth rate and large body size. It is widely used by farmers and homesteaders looking for efficient, high-yield meat birds. Housing and Management Like other geese, White Embdens do not require roosts and remain at ground level (floor). They benefit from access to water and grazing areas to support natural feeding behavior. Shipping and Availability Cackle Hatchery® offers seasonal goose availability based on hatch timing. Due to shipping regulations, we cannot ship geese to Hawaii.
