Assorted Call Ducks

Description Call ducks are the smallest of all domestic duck breeds. At maturity they weigh less than 2 pounds. They were developed in the Netherlands during the 1600s. Their original purpose was to lure wild ducks for hunters with their loud quacking, hence their name. Being friendly and inquisitive, they make great pets. Call ducks are also the most popular domestic duck breed on the show circuit. Although show conformation calls for especially short heads with short bills, our Call ducks tend to be more natural shaped, which improves their lifespan and ability to produce young. Call duck hens lay small eggs that may be pale blue, pale green, or white. They lay between 25 and 75 eggs per year. They rarely brood, but when they do they make good mothers, which is a good thing because the ducklings are tiny and extremely delicate during their first few weeks of life. The original call duck plumage was similar to a mallard, from which this breed derived. Numerous color varieties have since been developed.
