Description Blue Swedish Duck Breed History and Origin The Blue Swedish Duck is one of the oldest domesticated duck breeds, valued for its hardiness and versatility. Originating in Germany, this breed was admitted to the American Standard of Perfection in 1904 and remains a popular choice for backyard flocks and small farms. Cackle Hatchery® Poultry Breeding Farm has been developing its Blue and Black Swedish duck bloodlines since 1977, maintaining strong performance and adaptability. Appearance and Breed Characteristics Blue Swedish ducks are known for their distinct blueish-gray plumage, often accented with a white bib on the chest. Their coloring can vary slightly due to the genetics of blue-feathered breeds. Mature hens typically weigh around 6 pounds, while drakes average about 7 pounds, placing them in the Medium Weight duck class. Their natural coloration can also provide some camouflage in outdoor environments, helping them blend in more easily. Egg Production and Performance Blue Swedish ducks lay large to extra large eggs, producing approximately 130–180 eggs per year. Eggs are typically white, though occasional gray-tinted shells may occur. Temperament and Flock Suitability This breed is known for its docile, calm, and friendly temperament, making it an excellent choice for families and backyard flocks. Blue Swedish ducks are easy to manage and adapt well to a variety of environments, including colder climates. Fertility percentages generally range between 60–75%, with a recommended mating ratio of seven females to one male. Gender accuracy is approximately 90%. Cold Hardiness and Backyard Use Blue Swedish ducks are especially valued for their ability to thrive in colder climates, making them a dependable option in northern regions. They are well suited for backyard flocks, family settings, and small farm use, providing both eggs and meat while remaining easy to care for. Housing and Management Like other ducks, Blue Swedish ducks do not require roosts and remain at ground level (floor). They benefit from access to water and outdoor space for natural foraging behavior.
