Description Indian Runner Duck (Fawn & White) Breed History and Origin The Indian Runner duck is a distinctive and popular breed known for its upright posture and active nature. Originating from Indonesia (historically referenced as Malaysia), this breed was developed as a productive laying duck and later admitted to the American Standard of Perfection in 1898. Cackle Hatchery® Poultry Breeding Farm has been developing its Fawn and White Runner Duck bloodline since 1992, maintaining both performance and breed characteristics. Appearance and Breed Characteristics Indian Runner ducks are easily recognized by their long, slender body and upright carriage, often described as resembling a walking bottle. Unlike most ducks, they do not waddle—they run, which is a defining trait of the breed. The Fawn and White variety is one of the most popular color patterns. Mature hens typically weigh around 3.25 pounds, while drakes average about 4 pounds, placing them in the Light Weight duck class. Egg Production and Performance Indian Runner ducks are considered very good egg layers, producing approximately 100–180 large to extra large white eggs per year. Their consistent laying ability makes them a reliable option for backyard egg production. Temperament and Flock Suitability This breed is highly active, alert, and energetic, constantly foraging for vegetation and insects. They have a strong flock instinct but can be more nervous and easily startled compared to heavier duck breeds. Indian Runners are best suited for environments where they have space to move and forage. Fertility percentages generally range between 60–75%, with a recommended mating ratio of eight females to one male. Gender accuracy is approximately 90%. Backyard and Farm Use Indian Runner ducks are ideal for egg production, foraging, and pest control. Their constant movement and appetite for insects make them especially useful in gardens and farm settings. Housing and Management Like other ducks, Indian Runners do not require roosts and remain at ground level (floor). They benefit from open space and access to water to support their active behavior.
