Description White Chinese Geese Breed History and Origin The White Chinese goose is one of the smallest domesticated goose breeds, originating from China and admitted to the American Standard of Perfection in 1874. Known for both egg production and utility, this breed has remained popular for farms and homesteads. Cackle Hatchery® Poultry Breeding Farm has been developing its White Chinese goose bloodline since 1974. Appearance and Breed Characteristics White Chinese geese are recognized for their long, slender neck and upright posture, giving them a swan-like appearance. Their snow-white plumage and graceful build make them one of the more elegant goose breeds. Mature geese typically weigh around 10 pounds, while ganders average about 15 pounds, placing them in the Light goose class. Egg Production and Performance White Chinese geese are considered prolific egg layers for a goose breed, producing approximately 45–55 extra-large to 2XL white eggs per year. This makes them one of the better choices for those interested in goose egg production. Temperament and Behavior This breed is known for being alert, vocal, and protective. White Chinese geese will honk loudly when they sense something unusual, making them effective natural alarm birds. While they can become friendly with consistent handling, they can also be territorial, especially during breeding season. Broody females are highly protective of their nests, and males (ganders) can be aggressive if not managed properly. Bonding and Pet Potential White Chinese geese can make loyal and interactive pets when raised with regular human interaction. The best bonding results are typically achieved when raising a single goose with consistent attention, as they may imprint and closely follow their caretaker. Foraging and Farm Use This breed is an excellent forager, making it ideal for orchards, gardens, and pasture management. White Chinese geese are commonly used for natural weed and grass control, helping reduce maintenance in agricultural and backyard settings. Housing and Management Like other waterfowl, White Chinese geese do not require roosts and remain at ground level (floor). They benefit from access to water, grazing space, and secure housing to manage their territorial tendencies. Shipping and Availability Cackle Hatchery® offers seasonal shipping for geese based on hatch availability. Due to shipping regulations, we cannot ship geese to Hawaii.
