Description Columbian Wyandotte Chicken The Columbian Wyandotte Chicken is a striking and dependable American breed that was recognized by the American Standard of Perfection in 1905. Developed as part of the Wyandotte family, this variety is known for its beautiful white body accented with black neck hackles and a black tail, giving it a clean and classic farmyard appearance. Cackle Hatchery® offers the production-type line of Columbian Wyandottes, bred for steady performance rather than exhibition. These birds are considered a dual-purpose breed, valued for both egg production and meat use. Hens generally weigh around 6½ pounds, while roosters reach about 8½ pounds, with pullets and cockerels slightly smaller. They have clean legs and the traditional rose comb that Wyandottes are known for. Columbian Wyandottes are well known for their docile and calm temperament, making them an excellent choice for families and backyard flocks. They adapt easily to both confinement and free-range conditions and tend to do well in mixed flocks. Hens may go broody on occasion and are often dependable mothers when allowed to raise chicks naturally. Egg production is steady, with hens laying an estimated 180 to 260 medium-to-large brown eggs per year (production estimates only; see FAQ), depending on care, daylight, and environment. They prefer a roost height of two to four feet and do best with a breeding ratio of about nine females to one male, with fertility commonly ranging between 60 and 75 percent. Cackle Hatchery® has been developing its Wyandotte bloodlines for decades, focusing on strong laying ability, good fertility, and calm temperaments suited for backyard poultry keepers. At limited times of the year, we also offer fertile hatching eggs and started pullets for the Columbian Wyandotte. Many people who like this breed of chicken also like the miniature version of the breed, the Columbian Wyandotte Bantam Chicken.
