Description Black Laced Red Wyandotte Chicken The Black Laced Red Wyandotte Chicken is a beautiful American breed that traces its roots back to the late 1800s and is recognized by the American Standard of Perfection. Developed from the Wyandotte family of birds, this variety is prized for its rich reddish-gold feathers outlined in black lacing, giving it a bold and striking appearance in any backyard flock. Cackle Hatchery® offers a production-type strain of the Black Laced Red Wyandotte, bred for dependable performance rather than show. These birds are considered a dual-purpose breed, valued for both egg production and meat. Hens generally weigh around 6½ pounds, while roosters reach about 8½ pounds, with pullets and cockerels slightly smaller. Their clean legs, rose comb, and compact body shape give them the classic Wyandotte look. Black Laced Red Wyandottes are known for their docile and calm temperament, making them a good choice for families and mixed flocks. They adapt well to both confinement and free-range conditions and tend to be steady, easygoing birds around people. Hens may go broody on occasion and often make good mothers when allowed to set. Egg production is steady, with hens laying an estimated 180 to 260 medium-to-large brown eggs per year (production estimates only; see FAQ), depending on care and environment. They prefer a roost height of two to four feet and do best with a breeding ratio of about nine hens to one rooster, with typical fertility ranging between 60 and 75 percent. Cackle Hatchery® has been developing its pure production strain of Black Laced Red Wyandottes since 1989, focusing on consistent laying ability, good fertility, and a gentle temperament that works well for backyard poultry keepers. At limited times of the year, we offer fertile hatching eggs and started pullets for this breed. NOTE: In 2014 Cackle Hatchery® started using a better descriptive name for our Wyandottes’. With the emergence of the Blue Laced Red Wyandotte and other colors, we feel it would be less confusing to have a fully descriptive breed name. So, the “Red Laced Wyandotte” are now called Black Laced Red Wyandotte by Cackle Hatchery®.
